Groups

BOOKS & BAGELS

Books & Bagels is open to the community. The group meets monthly in the community room, usually on the second Sunday of the month at 10 a.m. (why not come a few minutes early to settle in to noshing?), and the discussion ends about noon. The group selects the books, usually in June and again in the fall. The parameters are that each book must be about a Jewish subject or by a Jewish author, and the titles include both fiction and nonfiction. Every discussion is facilitated by a member of the group. For more information, please call the synagogue office at 207-594-4523 or email info@adasyoshuron.org.

ADAS SYNAGOGUE YOSHURON CHOIR. The music our choir sings combines Baltimore cantor Abba Weisgall’s compositions and his son Dr. Hugo Weisgall’s arrangements with music by the great 19th-century Central European cantor-composers of Jewish liturgical music. Synagogue member and choir director Dr. Dana Goldsmith has expanded the choir’s repertory with his arrangements of  songs and prayers for Shabbat and in remembrance of the Holocaust. The choir is a beloved fixture of our High Holy Days services and sings at special events as well. In 2012, they recorded a CD, Songs of Life and Faith, in honor of the shul’s 100th anniversary. Click on Gift Shop to purchase a copy of the CD and to view a The Making of the Music CD, a video of the choir as they recorded the CD. The video includes an interview with Deborah Weisgall, Dr. Weisgall’s daughter. It was produced by filmmaker and member David Berez. (Note: The video is not for sale.)
